Warning: Spoilers Ahead
I haven’t completed reading the whole series yet but I did read the first book and I loved it. I had heard that the movie didn’t live up to the book and was just so wrong but had to see it for myself anyway. Now that I have watched it all the way through I really wished that I hadn’t because even if I want to go back and read the series how do I erase what I just saw from my mind.
First, I think the thing that I couldn’t get over the most was how quickly everything moved. Like I understand that it’s a movie so things can’t take as long as they do in books but the pace really changed everything. I felt that things were very rushed and there was no time to get to know any of the characters. The relationship between Hardin and Tessa felt rushed and the rest of the relationships seemed surface level or not even there. I think the book did a great job of letting us know these characters and making us feel for them but in this movie I didn’t care about what happened to any of them.
Another big thing that I couldn’t just by pass was Hardin’s personality and attitude with everyone not just Tessa. Hardin is an ass-hole in the book, it is the main reason why I like him and find the book so intriguing. Yes I know that the majority of their relationship is abusive and wrong but there’s something about it that makes me read more. The movie takes away so much of that and Hardin just seems like an awkward boy but nothing about him is scary, or harsh. Like at least make it believable that he isn’t just like the other guys Tessa interacts with.
There was so much more but I don’t want to write pages about this and go on for hours. I will probably watch the next movie though because I have to keep seeing how much worst it can get.
If you watched the movie without reading the books let me know your thoughts. Even better, if you read the books and then watched the movie lets talk.
